Our Name

Our name, Great Oaks Church, has two meanings. First, our name describes our community. We are in Oakland County, which received its name because, who would have guessed, there are lots of oak trees around here!

Second, the name describes what we are hoping to become - Oaks of Righteousness. Isaiah, who lived about 700 years before Jesus was born, prophesied about the Messiah, “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me; he has sent me to

bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners… They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, to display his glory.”

Jesus came to save and heal us so that we could become like mighty oaks, deeply rooted and strong - a people who live in loving, healthy and right relationship with God and with one another (that’s what the biblical word “righteous” really means). That's what we want to become!
